Google just announced that Google Gadgets, which were previously for use on the Google Personalized Homepage and Google Desktop, can now be embedded on your own webpage. The new "Universal Gadgets" include Google Maps, Google Calendar, a date widget, a Moon Phase widget, Driving Directions, Horoscopes, Hangman, PacMan, a Picasa widget, Google Video widgets, Monster job search and many more - there are 1220 of the darned things! Developers are also welcome to create their own gadgets.

This is a significant move from Google that puts them in a similar position to WidgetBox, MySpace's upcoming product TheSpringBox and other centralized widget repositories. There are some problems, however. Google have hidden the site away at a domain that's impossible to remember, and the widgets are javascript-based - that rules out MySpace, Friendster, hi5 and the majority if social networks, all of which ban javascript widgets (Piczo is one rare exception).

In related news, Google also launched a new version of the Google AJAX Search API today - this makes it easier to add a dynamic search box to your site.

Preparation

Step1
When you format a computer hard drive you will lose everything that is on the drive. Therefore, it is very important to back up anything you might want later. Additionally, if you are going to be formatting and installing XP you need to make sure you have the discs for any applications or third party hardware you use since you will need to re-install your programs and drivers after re-installing Windows.
Step2
Take a moment to think of anything that you have on the computer that you wouldn't want to lose. Generally, you probably want everything in your My Documents folder, and you also want to save things like your favorites or bookmarks from your Web browser. Remember that each user on the computer has his or her own My Documents folder, Desktop items and Favorites/Bookmarks.
Step3
Save everything to a CD, DVD or a hard drive that you won't be formatting.

Formatting a Secondary Hard Drive

Step1
Right-Click on the "My Computer" icon either on your desktop or in the Start Menu and select "Manage."
Step2
A new window titled "Computer Management" comes up. Select "Storage" from the left hand side by clicking it once, then select "Disk Management(local)" from the right side by double-clicking it.
Step3
Now in the lower part of the main frame (right side) of the window you should see a nice visual of all your hard drives. Each line is a different drive. Each box on a line (with a colored bar at the top and a size displayed in MB or GB) is a partition on the drive. Partitions are separations of space on a drive. Unless you are doing something specific that requires multiple partitions, you only want one partition per drive.
Step4
First you must delete any existing partitions on the drive you are going to format. Do this by right-clicking on the partition's box and selecting "Delete Partition..." Since you already know that you will be deleting everything on the drive, and have already backed everything up, you can safely say yes to any warning the computer presents you with.
Step5
If there are multiple partitions make sure you have saved everything off them since they might each have different drive letters (i.e. "D:" or "F:"). Then repeat the above step for each of them. If you only want to format one partition that is OK and you can continue to the next step without deleting the other partitions.
Step6
The box for the drive to be formatted should now have a black bar at the top of it and should say "Unallocated" under its size (see picture). Right click on it and select "New Partition..." The New Partition Wizard comes up.
Step7
In the New Partition Wizard click next. On the next page make sure "Primary Partition" is selected and click next. Now make the size equal to the maximum (it should already be set to it), and click next again. On the next page the computer will automatically choose the first available drive letter for the new drive. However, if you like you can choose another drive letter from the drop-down menu, and then click next.
Step8
Finally the New Partition Wizard asks if you would like to format the new partition and if so what format. Choose "NTFS" as it is faster and more secure. Leave the "Allocation unit size" as "Default." In the "Volume label" field enter whatever name you want the drive to have. Simple is better. Avoid using spaces. Lastly, if the drive is brand new and has never been used before check the "Perform a quick format" box. If the drive has been used before leave this box unchecked. Leave the "Enable file and folder compression" box unchecked and click next. Then on the next page click finish.
Step9
The wizard will now spend a little while formatting the drive. On old or large drives this may take a while. Do not close the "Computer Management" window until it finishes. You will know it is done when the word under the size of the drive changes from "Formatting" to "Healthy" and the name and drive letter you chose for the new drive show up. After it is finished you can proceed to use your newly formatted drive.

Formatting and Installing from the Windows XP CD

Step1
This section explains how to reformat a drive from the Windows XP installation CD. This can be used when installing a fresh copy of Windows onto a computer. Here it is especially important to backup all of your important information because upon formatting you will lose EVERYTHING that used to be on the drive. This includes all applications and device drivers, so you must back up everything you can.
Step2
Insert your Windows XP installation disc into your CD drive (Home or Pro--it does not matter).
Step3
Now as you computer boots a little more it will say "Press any key to boot from CD.." press a key to do so.
Step4
The CD will load up a blue screen and then spend a while loading files it needs. When it is finished it will list a few options, mainly "Press ENTER to set up Windows XP." Press Enter or Return.
Step5
Now you will be at a screen to select where to install Windows to. This is where you can delete old partitions and format drives. The box in the bottom half of the screen shows all your drives and the partitions that exist on them. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to highlight your "C:" partition and press the 'D' key (if all that shows up is "Unpartitioned space" and you have no C: or D: partitions, skip this step). On the next screen press the 'L' key to finalize deleting the partition.
Step6
Now you are back on the screen to choose where to install Windows. The box on the lower half of the screen should no longer show a partition but simply have an entry "Unpartitioned space xxxxxMB." Select this with the arrow keys and press the 'C' key to create a partition on the drive. The next screen tells you the minimum and maximum sizes the partition can be and lets you pick the size. The default size is the maximum, but double check that the number entered is the maximum and hit enter.
Step7
Now you will again be back at the choose where to install Windows screen. But this time you will have a partition that looks something like this "C: Partition1 [New (Raw)]xxxxxxMB." Highlight this entry and press enter.
Step8
The next screen lets you choose which file system to format the drive with. Choose NTFS as it is faster and more secure. If the drive is brand new and has never been used before then use one of the options that ends in "(Quick)." Or, choose one of the lower down options. Use the arrow keys to select the proper one and press Enter or Return.
Step9
From here you are all set and the installation of Windows will proceed starting with a format of your drive. This will take a while (over half an hour) so you can take a little break.

One thing I always hate to do is to find the best Antivirus program that will protect my computer. The two best paid versions that I have always heard about are Kaspersky and NOD32. For free software, I always look towards Avast or AVG. Of course, that is what I knew before but it looks like there may be some new people climbing the ladder.

Virus.gr tested quite a few different software companies to see how they would stack up against each other. How did the 147,000+ virus test pan out? Here are the results (the ones in bold are the ones I expected to do good):

1. Kaspersky version 6.0.0.303 - 99.62%

2. Active Virus Shield by AOL version 6.0.0.299 - 99.62%
3. F-Secure 2006 version 6.12.90 - 96.86%
4. BitDefender Professional version 9 - 96.63%
5. CyberScrub version 1.0 - 95.98%
6. eScan version 8.0.671.1 - 95.82%
7. BitDefender freeware version 8.0.202 - 95.57%
8. BullGuard version 6.1 - 95.57%
9. AntiVir Premium version 7.01.01.02 - 95.45%
10. Nod32 version 2.51.30 - 95.14%

ESET - Download NOD32 Here!

11. AntiVir Classic version 7.01.01.02 - 94.26%
12. ViruScape 2006 version 1.02.0935.0137 - 93.87%
13. McAfee version 10.0.27 - 93.03%
14. McAfee Enterprise version 8.0.0 - 91.76%
15. F-Prot version 6.0.4.3 beta - 87.88%
16. Avast Professional version 4.7.871 - 87.46%
17. Avast freeware version 4.7.871 - 87.46%

18. Dr. Web version 4.33.2 - 86.03%
19. Norman version 5.90.23 - 85.65%
20. F-Prot version 3.16f - 85.14%
21. ArcaVir 2006 - 83.44%
22. Norton Professional 2006 - 83.18%
23. AVG Professional version 7.1.405 - 82.82%
24. AVG freeware version 7.1.405 - 82.82%

25. Panda 2007 version 2.00.01 - 82.23%
26. Virus Chaser version 5.0a - 81.47%
27. PC-Cillin 2006 version 14.10.1051 - 80.90%
28. VBA32 version 3.11.0 - 79.12%
29. ViRobot Expert version 4.0 - 76.22%
30. UNA version 1.83 - 75.44%

There's the list and as you can see there are several towards the top that really shocked me. The one I am most happy about is the Active Virus Shield by AOL because it is offered to the public for free. Sure it branded as AOL but underneath it is all Kaspersky and this goes to show it.

I expected NOD32, Avast, and AVG to perform a little better than they did but NOD32 and AVG definitely fought back at the heuristic testing. Heuristic testing is extremely important because that is what gives an Antivirus the ability to catch a virus even it is not in the database. Here are the top 10 from that list:

1. Nod32 2.51.30 - 41503
2. Vba32 3.11.0 - 32911
3. VirIT 6.1.9 - 16469
4. AVG 7.1.405 Professional - 13624
5. AVG 7.1.405 freeware - 13624

6. Rising AV 18.41.30 - 12214
7. McAfee 10.0.27 - 10708
8. Ikarus 5.19 - 7191
9. F-Prot 6.0.4.3 beta - 6247
10. Ukrainian National Antivirus 1.83 - 5506

One thing is for sure and that is Norton needs some work for as much as it costs. So many people rely on Symantec's software because that is what comes installed on most computers but it obviously won't provide the protection that is needed.

I fix computers for people all of the time and when I find that their Antivirus subscriptions have expired I normally install Avast. After seeing these tests it definitely makes me ponder using Active Virus Shield by AOL because of the high ranking. Avast does have the Web Shield which stops malicious attacks through your Web browser and I really like that feature. I wonder what is more important, the overall ability to find a virus or being able to block Web attacks?

Update:
For more great antivirus and firewall information, please read our most recent article. It highlights many of the free antivirus, firewall, and anti-spyware solutions that are currently available to you.
Update 2:
We have done a follow-up article on this one with more up-to-date rankings for the antivirus software listed here. In that article you'll also find hyperlinks to each of the antivirus solutions listed.
Update 3:
Unfortunately AOL's Active Virus Shield is no longer available.
Update 4:
There are some new stats available as of December 6th, 2007: VB100 test and Retrospective test. The first test checks antivirus applications for known viruses, while the retrospective test sees how well the apps can do against "unknown" viruses.

Now that you know the effects adware has on your computer and the dangers of adware, you probably want to remove it from your computer.

There are two main ways you can remove adware: by using anti-adware programs that remove the adware for you, or manually.

Manual Adware Removal

To remove programs that you know are adware, you can try to do so manually. Although more malicious adware programs won't show up in your program list, some less intrusive adware may. In this case, you may be able to remove it through the uninstall function of your computer. For Windows users, you can do this by going to your control panel (in "Settings") and selecting the "Add/Remove Programs" function. Once in this application, you will see a list of programs. Click on the program you believe to be adware and click on "Remove." You should restart your computer afterwards to make sure all changes required for the adware to be removed are complete.

Unfortunately, most of the time removing adware is not this easy. For starters, how can you know for sure that a certain program is adware? How do you find out which program is the adware causing you trouble if you don't have any clues to begin with? How do you remove adware programs that don't appear on your program list? In addition, even if an adware program appears on your program list and you can uninstall it, in some cases not all traces of the program are actually removed. In this case, you should use an anti-adware program or adware cleaner.

Adware Removal Using an Adware Removal Program

Don't rely on your anti-virus program - you may want to check out our section on adware cleaners.

Start by downloading the latest updates for the adware cleaner program that you are using. This will ensure that the program is up to date on what adware to look for and how to find it. Most adware and spyware removers will have an "Update" button you can click on to download the latest information for their files.

Next, you want to exit all browser windows and programs that you have running. This includes email. You should also disconnect your computer from the internet.

Once everything is exited and you are disconnected from the internet, run a scan using your adware cleaner. This means that your adware cleaner will look for suspicious files on your computer and report back to you. To run a scan, press the "Scan" button.

After the scan, allow your adware cleaner to remove any adware it finds. But before this, turn on any immunization options to help protect your computer against these adware programs in the future. This option is normally denoted by a button called "Immunize."

After you run a scan using your adware cleaner the first time, restart your computer and run a scan again. Let the program remove any additional adware files. If suspicious files were found during the second scan, restart your computer and run the adware cleaner again. Keep repeating the scan-restart-scan process until your adware cleaner cannot find any more adware.

If you repeat this process three times and your adware cleaner keeps finding new adware, or if your cleaner cannot find any more adware but you think there's something left, you may want to try running a scan in your computer's "safe mode." When you start up your computer in "safe mode," only the most essential processes can activate. This will prevent adware from activating in the background and trying to hide itself while your adware cleaner scans for it.

When all adware is removed from your computer, you can start undoing any damage or setting changes it may have caused.

Other Options

Sometimes adware and spyware programs can become so embedded in your system that this can become too complex for you to deal with yourself. For example, your computer may not start up or even open its internet browser anymore. In these types of cases, you may want to contact a local computer technician who knows how to fix the problem.

The prevention of adware is better than the cure. You might want to learn about adware prevention so you can protect your computer from adware threats in the future.

Adware Removal Complications

Because adware is often used by the producers of free programs (freeware) to make a profit, the adware in effect sponsors the freeware. This being the case, many freeware programs will not work if your remove the adware that came with them. So if your freeware is more important to you than the annoyance and other problems associated with adware, you may choose not to remove it.

Sometimes you don't know for sure if a freeware program will stop working until you remove its adware. But there is a way to test whether removing adware will affect your freeware. Most adware cleaners give you an option called "Quarantine". This means the adware cleaner will not permanently delete adware files right away. Instead it will disable them and put them in a folder to be deleted later. This allows you to run programs after adware removal and make sure everything still works with the suspicious files removed. You can then go back into your adware cleaner and delete the suspicious files permanently. Or, if something is not working properly with the adware files quarantined, you can restore them. This lets you test the effects of adware removal on your programs without actually removing it.

However, if you choose the quarantine option and everything on your computer seems to be working well after the cleaning, make sure and go back into your adware cleaner and delete the adware files permanently.

Google has a solid amount of cash in its pockets, but with all the recent lawsuits against YouTube one has to wonder if it's time to salvage whatever videos you like from the service and save them somewhere where evil attorneys won't look - your hard drive.

Luckily, there are literally dozens of tools for downloading videos from YouTube and/or converting those YouTube videos to some format other than .flv. It's hard to pick the best one, as they all have pluses and minuses. Thus, we've chosen 23 YouTube downloader tools we've found to be actually working. Here they are, categorized according to the platform they work on:

Web based

1. YouTubeX doesn't have a lot of options, but it's simple, and it works. It also enables you to share the YouTube video with your friends via e-mail. Unfortunately, all the files are called get_video, and you have to add the .flv extension manually.

www.youtubex.com

2. KeepVid is another simple site. No hassle, works not only for YouTube movies but for a number of other sites, including Google Video, MySpace Video, DailyMotion and others. Again, you have to add the .flv extension by hand.

keepvid.com

3. VideoDownloader is very similar to KeepVid, but supports even more video sharing sites, and it's also available as a Firefox extension. Just like with KeepVid, all downloads are in .flv format. We recommend MediaCoder for free conversion.

javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php

4. YouTube Downloads takes the cake in the longest domain name contest. It also separates itself by using a proxy for downloading videos, which means that you might be able to get videos even if YouTube access is blocked at your workplace or in the country you live. Just search Google for YouTube videos, and copy/paste the URL into YouTube Downloads.

5. Zamzar is an online file format conversion site which can do a lot more than just converting YouTube videos to another format and downloading them to your hard drive, but it's doing a great job so we had to include it here. Thoroughly tested by us and highly recommended. See the video of it in action here.

6. YouTubia separates itself from the crowd by enabling you to search as well as download YouTube files. Options are scarce, but it works.

www.youtubia.com

7. VidGrab is another simple site that works with YouTube, Google Video, MySpace and Break.com. Besides the download function, the site also sports a top list of most viewed videos.

www.vidgrab.com

8. Vixy offers both downloading videos and converting them into DivX avi, mov, mp4, 3gp, or mp3 (for audio only) formats. The conversion works well enough, but sometimes results in slightly choppy playback.

vixy.net

9. Hey! Watch is an ambitious video encoding service with a large number of options, especially when it comes to converting videos to portable media player formats (it even supports my trusty iRiver H340.) Most online video converters often produce crappy results, with video and audio being out of sync, and this problem is also present on Hey! Watch, but it happens rarely.

heywatch.com

10. Media Converter can be a little slow, but the results of the video conversion are quite good. We've converted some YouTube videos to avi (mpeg4 + mp3) format and it worked well. The tool is not limited to video conversion; it also supports several audio and document formats.

11. KcoolOnline is a web-based converter which supports 98 video sharing web sites, including YouTube. It has literally zero options, so it's recommended for those who like to keep it simple.

Windows Applications

12. VDownloader is a desktop application that catches YouTube, Google Video, and Grinvi video links from your clipboard. Start it up, copy the video URL and click download. It automatically converts the videos to mpeg or avi formats.

13. YouTube Grabber downloads files from Youtube in .flv format. Copy and paste the URL of a video from YouTube into the program, press ?grab?, and the file will be downloaded into the same directory as the program.

14. Orbit Downloader is a desktop application which can download videos from a wide variety of sites. The download process is very simple, just hover your mouse over the video and you'll get a button that says ?Get It?. The developers of the program claim that it's very fast (up to 500% faster, they say) due to its P2P download technology.

15. My Video Downloader. With all these free tools, it's actually funny to see a commercial one. It's called My Video Downloader, and while it does look solid and offers a lot of conversion options (a free trial which enables you to download 10 videos is available), we're not sure it offers enough to warrant a price tag.

myvideodownloader.com

16. KeepV is a desktop downloader as well as a converter, which can convert the downloaded videos from flv to avi, mov, mp4, or 3gp formats.

keepv.com

17. VideoGet boasts being able to download video clips from more than 100 video sharing websites. We haven't tested all of them, so we're just going to take their word for it. It's a deskop application with a nice, simple interface, and a solid number of options.

18. TubeSucker is a desktop YouTube video downloader with some interesting options, including batch downloading large amounts of videos from a certain user. See the video tour on the site.

19. Get Tube is an OS X application which lets you download video or audio files from YouTube, DailyMotion and Kewego.

Linux

20. Youtube-dl. Here's some love for Linux users. Youtube-dl is a program that lets you download YouTube clips in flv format, which both mplayer and VLC can easily chew up.

www.nuxified.org/blog/download_youtube_video_files_with_youtube_dl

21. YouTube Ripper is not actually an application; it's a simple script that rips all videos that match a keyword, uploaded by a specific YouTube user. We don't really have ideas on what to use this for, but maybe you do! PHP port is also available.

nlindblad.org/2007/04/08/youtube-ripper-collectors-edition/

Plugins

22. Vidtaker is a Firefox-only plugin that can download videos from most streaming websites: Google Video, YouTube, MySpace, as well as a number of nasty adult SomethingTube spinoffs (Pornotube, YouPorn etc). It automatically converts the video to a DivX avi.

www.vidtaker.com

23. Ook? Video Ook! Yes, that's the full name of this Firefox plugin, which enables you to download videos from YouTube and several other video sharing web sites. It features one click downloading and integration with the popular DownThemAll Firefox plugin.

Many of the members do not know about HTML/CSS and feel unable to improve the look of their profiles.

What is HTML?

Rundown:

The easy answer is that html is the language of web pages.

In Depth:

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is a programming language used on the WWW (World Wide Web) in order to create web pages. Web browsers than interpret the HTML and display it so that users are able to view it. HTML is actually a very simple language once the basic concepts are understood. Just remember HTML is a client-side language which means the data is interpreted locally on your computer, not from the server.

I suspect that Movie Maker uses some non standard audio format. I don't use MM. I tried it and thought it was terrible. Wait for other suggestions, but mine would be to get your hands on a better video editor.

You might want to try the 'free' VirtualDub. It's not my main one but I use it occasionally for AVI/DIVX files and the fact that it's free amazes me.

Fully Integrated EPOS system running on standard PC solves accounting and inventory management headaches for small shop owners and convenience managers

[ClickPress, Sun Feb 10 2008] AccuPOS UK today launched AccuPOS Retail 2008, the latest version of the award winning EPOS solution for small-to-medium sized retailers and is available to buy now from AccuPOS UK. Based on extensive customer feedback, this popular electronic point of sale PC software includes many new and easy-to-use features specifically designed for use by today's retail entrepreneur.

El-Azar Levy, European Manager of AccuPOS UK said: "AccuPOS Retail 2008 packs in a wealth of new customer-driven features and improvements that simplify and speed up every day tasks Every one of our new enhancements came from customer feedback on how we could improve EPOS and accounting and inventory management. The end result is AccuPOS makes EPOS a simple and powerful tool for a retail entrepreneur who wants to focus all of their energies on growing their business."

AccuPOS Retail 2008 is fully compatible with all the major small business accounting programmes, including the latest 2008 release of the popular Quickbooks accounting software, Sage Line 50 and Peachtree by Sage. Automatically saving sales and customer information collected at the point of sale into the accounting software, AccuPOS eliminates the need to re-enter the data and the errors that can naturally occur. This latest version also notifies you via e-mail if the transaction fails to update, allowing the problem to be resolved immediately.

AccuPOS Retail 2008 further simplifies inventory management, making it easier and quicker to see what stock remains unsold and where it needs replacing. Managers can set-up rules to automatically deduct one item when selling another quickly and easily using AccuPOS Retail 2008, offering the ability to drive exciting new promotional offers with minimal user intervention. All of these changes are fed straight into your accounting software, ensuring that you have much more accurate inventory control and reports.

The range of customer service features are extended inside AccuPOS Retail 2008. Locating customer accounts is made much easier by the addition of new search fields including name, company and phone number. Customer service handling is therefore made much more responsive and staff are better equipped to answer queries or resolve a problem.

The software also lets you set additional rules for how you want to manage specific customer accounts, for example automatic discounts for preferred customers. There also are safeguards in place whereby the manager can ensure users don't discount a particular item where profit margins may be low.

AccuPOS Retail 2008 now offers a virtual EPOS training module which allows new employees to perform common transactions on the system without changing the books. New staff can be trained up to use the new EPOS software quickly with minimum impact on the rest of the business.
